Albuquerque, New Mexico to Flagstaff, Arizona

Wow!! What a day!!

Last night as soon as it got dark we drove over to the strip of all the neon lights, (photos that James posted last night.)  They were forecasting a big sand storm with wind gusting up to 60 mph.

We got home  before the storm, loaded  the car with most of our belongings afraid of having to do so with sand blowing into the car in the morning. Instead we woke up to a cool, but calm sunny morning. If the sand storm hit, we slept through it all.

Soon after our departure from Albuquerque, in no time we were at the Great Continental Divide. This is where all falling rain, on one side flows to the Pacific and the other side all rivers flow to the Atlantic.

After driving on the old Route 66 on several occasions, seeing old gas stations, old run down buildings, and even a teepee motel with several old 1950’s cars and trucks.

We came upon the most magnificent rock formations; this one area had caves, and painted Murals on the cliffs. I was taken with awe seeing such beauty in the colors, red, black, yellow and different formations of the cliffs.

Before long we crossed the border into the beautiful state of Arizona. Again the scenery was unbelievable; we stopped at a wonderful site that had the most amazing petrified trees, the color of the trees (rocks) was so beautiful. I did want to buy a small piece but the place was closed.

Now the high light of my day was something I would never have dreamed. How good can it get.!!!! A meteorite Crater!!!!  50,000 years ago in seconds a crater 700 feet deep and over 4000 feet across was carved into the once flat rocky plains, by a meteorite, traveling at 26,000 mph.

This is one of the most extraordinary places on earth.  I have seen a documentary on this crater on TV, but never dreamed I would see it today.

We finally arrived late in Flagstaff and had a late dinner celebrating James’s birthday but well worth it.

What a day!!! Can’t get much better. Until tomorrow.
